I think you are safe in saying that most of those names indicate MSG — things like “flavor” “flavorings” and “natural flavor” might be perfectly okay. The companies will argue that they aren’t actually MSG, but they are very close cousins and are added to foods for the very same purpose as MSG…making food appear to be meatier or tastier than it would be if it had only natural ingredients.
(In case there is a Chick Fil-A restaurant near you, stay away! I think they must use MSG by the carload!)
Another bogus claim is microwave popcorn with “no diacetyl”. A few years ago it became known that the artificial butter flavoring used in popcorn contains a very damaging chemical….diacetyl. Workers in a factory that made it became so disabled from being exposed to the fumes, they had to get lung transplants! The media gave it the name “popcorn lung.”
In the February 2010 Pure Facts I describe the fact that the substitute chemical being used in popcorn that is labeled “no diacetyl” is actually just another form of the same chemical!!
And don’t forget to check out page 6 of the October 2004 issue, which has a list of the ingredients in a school lunch cheese quesadilla. Is the school system cutting corners because they don’t have enough money to feed children real food? Actually, this atrocity comes from the 2nd wealthiest county in the US….Fairfax Co., VA.
